Classic American Donuts Recipe
Origin:
This beloved treat originated in the United States, with roots in Dutch immigrants who brought fried dough recipes. Over time, donuts became a staple of American cuisine, especially associated with breakfast and bakeries across the country.
Ingredients:
2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
¾ cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
¼ cup granulated sugar
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Vegetable oil for frying
For decoration and fillings (optional):
Powdered sugar, chocolate glaze, sprinkles, jam, custard, or cream.

Instructions:
Activate yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm milk, a teaspoon of sugar, and the yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
Mix dough: In a large bowl, combine remaining sugar, flour, salt, eggs, melted butter, and the activated yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead: Turn onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
Proof: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
Shape: Punch down the dough and rolling it out to about ½ inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two round cutters to cut out donut shapes.
Second proof: Place the cut donuts on a floured tray, cover lightly, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
Fry: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry donuts in batches for about 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
